7:30 - Speaker : Mike Gedeon, Brush Wellman - Avoiding the Pitfalls of Hardness Testing

Mike Gedeon obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering from the Ohio State University in 1995, and a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cleveland State University in 1998. He is currently a market applications development engineer at Brush Wellman Inc. in Cleveland, and a certified lean sigma green belt.  He has spent the last 7 years working with customers on material selection, failure analysis, and design assistance (including extensive finite element analysis) on applications using copper alloy materials.  He is a member of ASM, IEEE, and IICIT.

Avoiding the Pitfalls of Hardness Testing

There are several sources of inaccuracy in hardness testing, including miscalibration, improper fixturing, readings outside the standard range of the scale, and curvature.  Readings should not be taken too near an edge or too close together.  The indenter/load combination must not be too large for the sample, nor should thin strip be stacked during testing. Readings should not be taken through plating. Caution should be used when converting readings from one hardness scale to another, using only the proper conversion charts for that material, such as the one developed by Brush Wellman for copper beryllium strip, or those appearing in ASTM E-140.
