The Engines of Our IngenuityJohn H. Lienhard holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He earned his M.S. and B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington and Oregon State College, respectively. Dr. Lienhard is the M.D. Anderson Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, and of History, at the University of Houston, where he has taught since 1980. Dr. Lienhard is known for his research in the Thermal Sciences as well as in cultural history. Dr. Lienhard he is the author or co-author of six books and more than 300 articles. Dr. Lienhard is the author and voice of over 2000 episodes of The Engines of Our Ingenuity, a daily public radio series about machines and the people who created them. The episode is produced by KUHF-FM, Houston, and heard nationally on Public Radio. The episodes transcripts are available on the Engines web site at www.uh.edu/engines. For his work on Engines, ASME awarded Dr. Lienhard the 1998 Engineer Historian award and the 1989 Ralph Coates Roe Award for contributions to the public understanding of technology. American Women in Radio and Television honored Dr. Lienhard with the1991 Portrait Division Award. In 2005 Dr. Lienhard won the 2005 Crystal Microphone Award. Dr. Lienhard has done over 2,500 broadcasts, delivering shows five-days-per-week. Dr. Lienhard has many awards to his credit. Just to list a few, Dr. Lienhard was awarded Portrait Division Award for The Engines of Our Ingenuity by American Women in Radio and Television and University of Houston Engineering Alumni Distinguished Engineering Faculty Member Award. In 1991 the University of Houston presented Dr. Lienhard with its highest faculty honor, the Esther Farfel Award for excellence in research, teaching and service to his profession and the community. Dr. Lienhard has delivered over 1200 major addresses and is planning another forty or so this year. Dr. Lienhard has received nearly 30,000 visitors from all over the world. Dr. Lienhard is an Honorary Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
