January 2009 Meeting

January 6 , 2009

5:30 Social Hour

6:30 – 7:30 Dinner

7:30 – Speaker : Chris Kuykendall,
Technical Advisor, DUCO Inc.

Chris has 10 years combined service in the offshore drilling and subsea industry. The past 7 years have been focused in the subsea umbilical/component welding arena.

Since joining Duco in 2002, Chris has been involved in all aspects of project work-loads. He has written client specific specifications to cover all aspects of welding during the project work load. Project responsibities include welding, welder testing and over-seeing the major factors that include production welds and terminations to sub-sea components. Chris has been instrumental in carrying out project work for the BP Block 18 (Greater Plutonia), Total Moho-Bilondo, Shell Perdido and Anadarkos Power Play just to name a few.

Prior to his work at Duco, Chris workd in quality control at PS Fabricators where he assisted the company in successfully attaining their ASME U stamp which gave them the ability to fabricate pressure retaining vessels.

He also worked on the Shell Manatee project during this time. Previous work includes project superintendent, QC technician and pipe welder for various companies in the Houston area.

Advancements in Welding and Inspection Processes, Procedures and Techniques Learn how to reduce operating cost, safety risk, evironmental waste and improve customer satisfaction at the same time.

A brief over-view of welding and processes and their uses in all industry will be presented.

Definitions at which Procedure Qualification Records are performed and solidify Welding Procedure Specifications throughout the entire welding industry will be discussed including an absolute explanation of the welding written documents into
all industries through-out the world today.

Practices at which we are able to determine through science and calculations if the joining of metals is sound and over-all fit for purpose with-in the specifications given of the base materials themselves.

Destructive testing procedures, nondestructive examination techniques, ultrasonic testing and radiographic testing and how they relate to the above will be presented.

Destructive testing procedures will cover tensile testing, guided bend testing, macro-section examinations, hydrostatic burst testing.

The means of testing production welds in-line, without the destroying the integrity of the joined material with-in the assembly phase itself will cover the different forms of testing including dye-penetrant examination, magnetic-particle examination as defined for surface discontinuities, ultrasonic testing and finally radiographic testing.

For radiographic sensitivity, the means of determining the over-all value of a radiographic image itself, the presentation will define the calculations which determine image quality and it’s history with-in the wide open market(s).

Techniques to improve the image quality in order to virtually obtain the absolute highest resolution with-in our industry today, no matter the application or material being radiographed will be shared.
