Turbine Component Life Assessment and Failure Analysis
Turbines are one of the methods employed to compress natural gas. Compressing natural gas reduces its volume and provides a means to move it through pipelines more efficiently. Turbine components are exposed to high temperatures and stresses. A system for inspecting turbines in order to ensure proper operation has been developed at El Paso Corporation. The El Paso Metallurgy Lab assists in these overhauls by providing insight into the thermal degradation of materials and performing failure analysis when necessary. This presentation will highlight assessment strategies used by our lab. In addition, there will be a brief discussion on the properties, chemistry, microstructure and degradation mechanisms seen in superalloys and finally a look at some case studies.

Shalayna Lair works as a metallurgical engineer performing failure analysis for El Paso Corporation at their El Paso, Texas Metallurgy Lab. She began working there in 2007 after graduating with a doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of El Paso at Texas. Her graduate work focused on computational chemistry simulating carbon nanotubes making stability comparisons between different structures. El Paso Corporation provides natural gas and related energy products in a safe, efficient, and dependable manner. The company owns North America‚s largest interstate natural gas pipeline system approximately 42,000 miles.
